Japón, Honduras Project

Choloma, Honduras — Central America

One hot Sunday in March 2000 a group of North American Christians with a heart to help children living in poverty handed out baloney sandwiches, glasses of orange juice, and a lot of prayers to 25 homeless children in the town square of San Pedro Sula, Honduras. A little while later after collecting donations in the US to continue to reach out to these children, the Japon Project was birthed.

Japon is ORC’s first and most mature project. Thanks to the generosity of Frank and Nilsa McKinney and Food for the Poor, in 2002 ORC was able to partner with Pastor Nehemias Chavarria of Iglesia Avance Misionero to initiate a complete community development program to benefit the more than 1,000 children roaming the streets of this small impoverished neighborhood with scarce food, education, clothing, and medical attention.

Through partnerships with the The Caring House Foundation, FEDECOH, the Municipality of Choloma , and various donors, ORC was able to provide homes for 20 of the most underprivileged families in the community.

A feeding center was built and began to provide nutritious lunches 7 days a week to local children up to about 16 years old. A well was dug and a water purification system was installed for the community to have clean, safe water to cook with and drink. Additionally, basic medical and dental services began to be provided to the children.

Because education plays a very important role in the future of the children and the entire society, the Japon Public School was expanded in 2007 by building more classrooms, new restroom facilities, and an office for the teachers. Besides increasing the educational capability to 7th grade, these new classrooms also allowed for the inclusion of Bible classes which are taught once a week by the local sponsorship coordinator, Fanny Chavarria.

Thanks to help from Cross International, a Computer Lab was also created and computer-based instruction was added to the curriculum. These additional classrooms are also able to be used during the evenings for vocational training and adult literacy classes for parents, as well as for youth outreach programs.
